Bobcat Men's Basketball Falls to Clayton St; Conference Play Continues vs. Georgia Southwestern

This past Saturday at the Centennial Center, men's basketball head coach Terry Sellers and his Bobcats hit a speed bump in the 2010/2011 season against Peach Belt Conference foe Clayton State.

The Bobcats (7-3, 1-1 PBC) dropped a 65-62 decision to the Lakers. Georgia College was led by the 14 points of junior forward Ryan Aquino. The Bobcats led for much of the second half, but Clayton took the lead back late and never relinquished it.

Now, after a snow day and a quick practice on Tuesday, the 'Cats hit the floor to face a highly talented Georgia Southwestern squad. The Hurricanes (8-3, 1-1 PBC) are much improved from last years team that saw head coach Mike Leeder's crew finish at 7-20, along with a 3-13 conference mark.

Get ready to see some prolific scoring. The Hurricanes average six players in double figures, led by Philip Brown's 17.3 each outing. Almost as impressive is the rebounding numbers for the Hurricane crew. Georgia Southwestern holds opponents to just 27.7 rebounds per game.

The task is tough for a young, but athletics Georgia College team. Here are some keys to get back on track tonight:

1) DO NOT SETTLE FOR THREE POINTERS: What was once the calling card for Georgia College in the past has now gone astray. Georgia College is shooting below 30 percent at a team from downtown. But, the Bobcats are talented off the dribble penetration. If the Bobcats can execute their offense and not settle for outside jumpers, the team will have a chance to win.

2) DEFENSIVE INTENSITY: After the loss to Clayton State, Coach Sellers said multiple times that he thought his team was not energized enough to play. It's important for the seniors and team captains to get the guys focused, excited and ready to play with a sense of urgency. Conference play is the most important part of the year and going by in a flash, a team can find themselves in a deep hole if they are not ready to play each and every day.

3) AGGRESSIVE POST PLAY: Senior Reece Wiedeman has been outstanding for the most part over the past four games. Along with senior Josh Hurst and Aquino, the Bobcats present a rare three-forward attack. I'd like to see Georgia College use the interior more often as a main option against the Hurricanes.

4) ENJOY THE HOMECOURT: Students are back in town and a big crowd is expected to show up. Feed off the energy of the "6th man," and things should be just fine.

GC Women's Basketball Team Falls to #5 Clayton St; Set for Georgia Southwestern on Wed

Despite the snow, ice and wild winter weather, the coast is clear for basketball on Wednesday, Jan. 12 vs. Georgia Southwestern.

Women's head coach Mo Smith and the Bobcats (8-2, 0-2 Peach Belt Conference) will take on the Hurricanes after dropping a tough loss this past weekend to #5 Clayton State 53-42. The Bobcats were led by senior guard Chimere Jordan's 21 points. GC led for most of the second period, but Clayton was able to go on a 21-4 run to close out the ball game.

After a day off on Sunday and Monday due to inclement weather and a short practice on Tuesday, the Bobcats return to the hardwood to try and right the ship.

The Hurricanes (6-5, 0-2 PBC) are a much improved team from last year. Hurricane head coach Kelly Britsky has stuck with tough seasons in the past and now has a chance to really make some noise in a competitive conference.

The Hurricanes are led by Cierra Duhart at 10.2 points per game, accompanied with 8.4 rebounds per game. The Hurricanes also present an interesting scoring attack with five players that average over 7 points per game.

Knowing that the Hurricanes are a well balanced ball club, the keys for a Bobcat victory are as follows:

1) LIMIT THE GUARD PENETRATION OF SOUTHWESTERN: The Hurricanes will have three main players at the guard set who will shoot from the outside and penetrate the Bobcat defense. Therefore, it will be important for GC to play solid perimeter defense against the talented back court.

2) GET SOMEONE ELSE SCORING ALONG WITH CHIMERE: Seior guard Chimere Jordan has been outstanding thus far on the year. The Gray, Ga. native has scored at least 20 or more points in five straight games. In the last game against #5 Clayton, though, Jordan was the lone player in double figures for Georgia College. If the Bobcats want to be successful, other players will have to step up throughout the contest.

3) MAKE THE EASY LAYUPS: Too many times against #5 Clayton St. the Bobcats missed easy runners, most of which were uncontested. In the second half alone, Georgia College missed 4 layups against the Lakers. Making simple shots will be imperative for the Bobcats on Wednesday night.

4) BENCH PRODUCTION: How well the Bobcat bench can perform on Wednesday night could be a key factor in the match. I will be looking at both teams bench production throughout the night to see which team can take advantage.

Other stories will unfold, I'm sure. Make sure you join in for the broadcast at 5:30 on www.gcsus.nmtvsports.com ! The telecast is set for 5:25. Bobcats vs. Hurricanes on your weekday Wednesday!
